There are perhaps three questions that propel most pursuits of knowledge: Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going? This one-semester course will address these ultimate questions from the perspective of Christian theology with the Apostles Creed as our guide. By reading primary and secondary source documents, students will learn how Christian theology guides man’s calling to know and love God. Topics included in course discussion and readings will include theologies of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, humankind, sin, salvation, the problem of evil, and heaven. We will see the various ways theologians have approached these topics from different denominational perspectives as well as epistemological methods. Additionally, we will apply our theological pursuits to current discourse regarding culture, politics, and the life of the Church.

The end goal of this class is to provide students with a holistic understanding of Christian theology. Intellectually, they will be able to articulate how Christianity approaches ultimate questions. Most importantly, however, students will hopefully be encouraged to see their faith as all-encompassing. Not only does Christian faith/theology address the mind, but they will find that it also addresses the heart, soul, and imagination as well. By the end of the course, they will hopefully have a better understanding of what it means to say “I believe,” with their whole person—mind, body, and soul.
