Who is this class for?

This course is specifically for juniors and seniors applying to college this fall who want personalized feedback on their personal statements and supplemental essays from an IEW Certified Writing Instructor.

Overview:

This is a writing-intensive course as students will work on several versions of a personal statement until they have a “winning” essay. We will explore multiple types of essays, structures, and revise, revise, revise like a sculptor with a chisel. Slowly, methodically, and intentionally.

August - October (Early Action/Early Decision Timeline): Work on the personal statement required through the Common App. Students will have a better grasp of how to format an essay for college admissions.

November - December: Next, we will turn our attention to supplemental essay writing. These are typically shorter and specific to each school. (Please note: We will do our best to cover as many of the schools that students are applying to. However, this is dependent on the number of students and how many schools they want to apply to.)

Times/pacing may be adjusted as needed.

Expectations:

  • Students should expect weekly writing and revision outside of class, with detailed, individualized feedback throughout the semester.
  • Students will be expected to bring their writing to class each week. Failure to do so means fewer opportunities to work on the writing as a group, discuss strategies and hangups, or contribute to peer review.
  • As a reminder, this is a writing-intensive course, and it is ultimately up to the student to put in the work each week, at home and in class, until they have a “winning” essay.

Tuition: $350/semester (Does not include MAS registration fees.)

5 students minimum - 15 maximum
