Art History
Students will love Art History by learning classical stories in chronological order. They are enriched through the hands-on implementation of techniques utilized by artists throughout the ages. For example, among other projects, they experience drawing using silverpoint tools invented before lead pencils, mixing and painting with their own egg tempera pigment, and using clay to create low-relief sculptures. They also learn when, where, and why art started and how this revolutionary history affects art today. Artists from each period built on previous knowledge and innovations bringing art forward to the next generation. Students venture back in time studying the architecture and inventions of famous artists, important works such as the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, Michelangelo's sculpture of David, and the Old Masters who have influenced us throughout time. First semester students discover the art of prehistoric peoples, ancient Egyptians, and ancient Greeks. They explore the Medieval and Early Christian art of the Dark Ages, and experience the excitement and rebirth of the four periods of Renaissance thru the discoveries and beauty of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Second semester covers Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Romanticism, and Realism, opening the path for Impressionists and Post Impressionists such as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Degas, and John S. Sargent. Students are graded at the end of each semester incorporationg their notes with a test that covers periods of art, artists, important dates and famous works of art.
