Course Description: This college-preparatory course will focus on acquainting students with the prose and poetry of American authors from the early days of colonization through the present. Organized chronologically and by context, this course covers the historical context, literary movements, and principal players that helped to shape American culture and society.

We will be reading with the goals of studying character development, plot, themes, and use of language.   Students will be introduced to literary criticism and progress in written composition skills through instruction and guided practice in reader response, literary analysis, and writing with research.  We will learn how to research using AI as a tool but without crossing lines of plagarism.

Class time will be centered on large-group discussion, small-group learning activities, and limited lecture for new literary concepts.  Satisfactory completion of all assignments related to this course will earn the student 1 Carnegie Unit in English.
