Class Description: This engaging and informative course will develop the skills and confidence needed for high school English classes. This is best taken in conjunction with Middle School Literature to complete a full language arts block. 

Prerequisite: Successful completion of English Grammar and Composition 1 or its 6th or 7th grade equivalent. Please contact me if you have questions on placement.  

Class Fees: $350/ semester, plus $100 MAS administrative fee, made payable by check or  Venmo @Lindsay-Fluker-1, last 4 digits are 0708. Payment is due by the first day of class. 

Areas of Study: 

  • Writing: Students will write a variety of texts, including personal narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and literary response pieces. Students will also compose a research paper, learning both MLA and APA format. Students will be guided throughout the writing process and receive feedback to refine their skills. 
  • Grammar: Students will review and apply the basic elements of grammar, including correct usage, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Vocabulary: Students will expand vocabulary through the study of Greek and Latin roots.
  • My Life Project: Students will work throughout the year to create their own personal autobiography. This is a fun project that my students always love! Much of the writing assigned will be related to the My Life Project due at the end of the year. Project presentations will take place in the spring. 

Materials Required: 

  • Sadlier’s Grammar for Writing 8, New Edition available on Amazon 
  • Laptop computer that can be brought to class, along with WiFi and printer access at home
  • Students need their own gmail account for access to Google Classroom
  • Composition book for journaling
  • One 3 inch binder to hold English work 

Online Work: 

Students will utilize the following online platforms for submission of work: 

  • Google Classroom: accessing daily assignments, discussions, some quizzes
  • No Red Ink: Scaffolded writing instruction; personalized grammar review 
  • EdPuzzle: Satellite / distance learning instructional media platform 
  • Online study aids such as kahoot, quizzizz, quizlet and “We Will Write”

Students will receive activation codes during the first month of school. 

Homework, Testing and Grades

Students should expect approximately one hour of homework each day. Occasionaly, quizzes will be given at home to maximize instructional time. Grades will be posted to Gradebook in a timely manner, generally within a week of the due date.
