This dynamic class is perfect for seventh or eighth grade students who have already completed a grammar/composition at MAS. Students will review and build upon their grammar knowledge. Students will learn how to conduct research, craft a thesis, create an outline, and write an essay. Students are actively engaged in the writing process and are supported at every step. Each student receives personal feedback on his/her papers so he/she can learn and grow as a writer. This course blends well with Literature for the Middle School Student to create a complete language arts block. Students should plan on spending 4 - 5 hours a week on homework for this course.

Requirements/Expectations for entry:

  • Students are expected to know how to type or be enrolled in a course to learn.
  • Students are expected to know how to write a solid paragraph.
  • Students are expected to dedicate one hour a day to homework.
  • Students are expected to have a Gmail account
  • Parents are expected to spend 15 minutes a day with their student to check that homework is being completed, to provide guidance, and to answer questions.
  • Parents are expected to provide needed materials for the course prior to the start of the course.

Seventh graders who have taken a formal grammar/composition class should enroll in this course. This is the second in our series of middle school grammar/composition courses. If your child took the Grammar/Comp. 2 course last year, they can enroll in this course as it is different material.

New students MUST seek permission from the instructor before enrolling.

Tuition: $325 a semester and a one time fee of $150 to cover materials and administrative fees.

Most students will benefit from having a laptop to use in class.

Students will need access to a laptop or computer at home.

Students  will need a working printer at home, a three-hole punch, and a binder. At school students should always have pencils, erasers, paper, highlighters, and their binder.

On Monday, November 24th, students will have a virtual learning day. Videos and assignments will be posted the preceding week, allowing students to access and finish them ahead of time if they choose.
