Three minute promo video: https://derekowens.com/Files/RTH_Promo_short.mp4 Course Description: This year-long course examines specific historical topics from prehistory and the Roman age through the twentieth century - from Stonehenge to the pulling down of the Berlin Wall. Research and lectures, in conjunction with on-site visitations, will engage and instruct the students with the aim of increasing both their knowledge and appreciation of the past through experiential, interdisciplinary learning as individuals, in small groups, and in a larger group setting. The importance of the individual living in community is stressed. Requirements include pre-trip readings from either primary sources or scholarly writings in lieu of a textbook, lectures, and readings quizzes on selected topics, a six-page research paper, and successful participation in and completion of the rigorous overseas itinerary (a 21day excursion abroad is planned for early June, specific dates TBD). Further educating the whole person, daily runs, strongly encouraged but not required, form an integral part of the course, as well as affording a unique view of the rural and urban settings of the day. Course work will be evaluated as follows: Participation 50%; Readings quizzes 25%; Research paper; 25%. Everyone begins this course with a 100% grade in participation. Given the unique and rigorous nature of the trip, a cooperative attitude and punctuality are essential. The student must be able to live and work in community. Participation grade points are lost as a result of a lack of punctuality or failure to meet requirements with respect to assignments, meetings, activities, curfews, and the dress code. Once abroad, students will often be assigned nightly readings. The daily runs are not required, but they form an integral part of the course experience, and every effort should be made to participate in these runs; however, as an example, you may choose not to run the Gaisberg Rundwanderweg, a trail with breathtaking views high above Salzburg, Austria, but you must be with the group walking the trail. The dress code, given all we represent while abroad, will be strictly enforced. Once overseas, multiple tarries, failure to meet nightly room curfews, failure to maintain the four-person group rule, failure to meet the dress code, or failure to maintain a cooperative spirit may result in the student being sent home and dismissed from the course. Once overseas, any failure to follow the established security procedures, any mixed hotel room visitation, or any use of non-prescription drugs or alcohol will result in the student being immediately sent home—dismissed from the course. If a student is sent home he or she must bear all related expenses at that time, and all monies and all course credit will be forfeited. Finally, the students must sign a pledge stating they can live and work within the established guidelines of the course.
A typical day abroad consists of an early morning run or walk of various lengths from 15 minutes to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace, followed by breakfast and a rigorous schedule of proposed sites. Average daily miles walked will be about 7 miles, or 150 miles in 21 days. Advice for buying lunch and dinner provisions are in the itinerary for days when regular meal hours may not be available. Limited lunch and dinner excursions in groups of four are allowed. Every effort will be made to complete the itinerary, but events may force changes to be decided by Mr. Tribble. The price for the 21days abroad is all inclusive, excluding meals, and will be determined by the number of course participants; however, as a guide, previous 21day excursions abroad I have led cost approximately $6,500. Please keep in mind prices have risen in recent years. Parents are welcome to participate in the 21 days abroad, but they are not expected to attend the weekly classes; however, parents are encouraged to complete all the course readings.
