CT-1 When Students Ask: Tough Questions, Doubt & Uncertainty (Mon)
Course Overview: Doubt and uncertainty is often perceived as negative and looked down upon as a lack of faith. However, that is not necessarily the case. We all have doubts. If not, then faith would be meaningless. When students ask tough questions, or express their doubts and share their uncertainty about Christianity, it indicates that they are “thinking for themselves.” It is extremely important that we help young adults to think for themselves with respect to their faith. Course Design & Content: This course was designed to help students evaluate and navigate the cultural and social landscapes that encourage doubt and uncertainty. The content of this course is based upon a list of students questions, doubts or objections submitted in an anonymous manner on the first day of class. Their questions usually include: the origin of the universe and life, the existence of God, the nature of truth, morality, good and evil, the credibility of the Bible and why is Jesus the only way to God? However, instead of teaching them "what to think" about these questions, they are taught "how to think" about them and how to reach their own conclusions. A Journey into the Mind of Christ: The communication strategy used for part of the course will be taken from the interactions Jesus had with skeptics, antagonists and those who truly wanted to know him and follow him. Students will learn how Jesus used critical thinking skills to ask “principle-centered” questions and how he illustrated certain truths through the use of imagery and parables. Contemporary Film Analysis: Various movies and film clips will be examined to help students evaluate the philosophies and viewpoints upon which these movies are based. This skill is extremely important in light of the fact that young adults are living in the midst of a narrative-rich pop culture saturated with all kinds of imagery, movies, video games and computer generated realities. Course Materials: A Bible, a note pad, and a three ring binder for handouts is all that is needed. All other study materials will be provided.
