Spanish 1
Spanish I is an introduction to the beauty, intricacy, and richness of the Spanish language. Along with the language itself, we will study the history of Spain and Latin America, the cultures of the Spanish and LA people, and the contributions of outstanding Hispanic Americans. Spanish is spoken by over 572 million people worldwide, with 57.9 million of those speakers in the US. Understanding and speaking Spanish opens many doors for students. It stands out on college applications, job applications, and - as a personal benefit - makes travel experiences far more interesting and rewarding. The goal of Spanish I is for your student to be comfortable using basic conversational Spanish to navigate in a restaurant, travel confidently, and interact with non-English speaking persons in their corner of the world. It will also lay down the foundation for continuing onto Spanish II. There will be online assignments, in addition to the textbook assignments, with accompanying drills that will develop and reinforce the four essential skills of learning Spanish: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. As we only meet at school one day a week, I ask the students to meet online for a second class session. I also make myself available for additional individual learning sessions as a student desires in order to support their success. Reliable Internet and email are essential for Spanish homework.
