This course is for students who have successfully completed ASL 1 or through testing demonstrate equivalency!  In this course, the student will build upon the basics of ASL I.  The focus will be to continue to build on visual acuity, physical dexterity in accurately producing and understanding signs demonstrated, fingerspelling and numbers, everyday vocabulary, building grammatical structures in conversational fluency in ASL while developing the student’s appreciation of Deaf culture. The student will enjoy learning to sign songs, scriptures, simple stories and much more to enhance the learning of ASL.

As in ASL I, the student will be encouraged to use ASL in the classroom and practice with others outside the classroom. Voice in the classroom will continue to be minimal to help to immerse the student in the language.  It is one of the best ways to become comfortable with the language and helps with retention of what has been learned and help to improve both receptive and expressive skills.

ASL 2 will expand upon ASL 1 grammar, facial expressions, body language be introduced to Classifiers and continue with learning new vocabulary.  The student will begin to translate sentences from voice to ASL sign as well as ASL sign to voice.  It is required that the student attend a minimum of three (3) DEAF events within the DEAF community and write a minimum two (2) page paper on their experience while at the event.  These events are held throughout the Atlanta area and can be located through the websites www.epeachynews.org.

For this course, we will continue to use ‘A Basic Course in American Sign Language' (second edition), by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke-- second half of the textbook.  The class will use supplemental materials (Handouts provided by the instructor).

We will continue to use a lot of repetition, so… “Relax and Continue to Have Fun!“
