Latin 1 & 2
Latin 1 provides students with a clear introduction to Latin grammar and reading that aims to delight and cultivate in them the wonder of language. Students study noun declensions, verb conjugations, tenses, and other parts of speech such as adjectives, prepositions, and adverbs. They begin studying and translating adapted, original Latin paragraphs featuring the Roman historian Livy. Students also learn some of the history and culture of ancient Rome. Latin 1 teaches over 500 Latin vocabulary words and imparts an understanding of many English words derived from Latin. This course is designed as an introductory Latin course; no prior Latin instruction is required. Students should be able to study independently and be ready to memorize grammar and vocabulary (around 20 words per week) besides completing homework assignments. The primary text the students use will be the award-winning text, Latin Alive! Book 1, the first of three books in the Latin Alive! series. **Classical Academic Press released a NEW Revised Edition of this text as of 2017. The new revised edition (Version 3.0) is required for this course. Older versions of the student edition and answer key are not compatible with the course. Students who have taken Latin 1 may take this course for Latin 2. The course will be split to support both groups as needed. Latin 2 will have full access to the video teaching.
