World Literature and Composition 2022-2023 “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ―Dr. Seuss Are you looking for a class where you can read acclaimed world literature and have fantastic text-based discussions without a lot of busy work? If so, this class is for you! World Lit and Comp is a class for people who like reading and talking about great books from all over the world. This class is for people who want to pull up a seat to the Great Conversation by engaging with novels, stories and plays that grapple with some of life’s most challenging issues like oppression, totalitarianism, morality, courage, tragedy, racial injustice, endurance, freedom and more. This class is for people who want to consider what the Bible says about these issues and who want the challenge of writing about what they are reading and learning. Novels: Maus: A Survivor’s Tale by Art Spiegelman (German - American) In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez (Dominican Republic) Algonquin Books Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton (South Africa) One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksndr Solzhenitsyn (Russia) A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen (Norway) purchase the Dover Thrift edition $3.00 thru Amazon and other sellers Brave New World by Aldus Huxley (England) (Harper Perennial Press) All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (USA) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (Brazil) Films / Plays Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (France) The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (Afghanistan) Shakespeare at the Shakespeare Tavern (England) in the Spring Summer Reading: Please email me for the summer reading list and assignment Tuition - $425 per semester, $800 if paid in full by Sept 7 Supply Fee – There is an $100 administrative and supply fee due at the beginning of first semester.
