Spanish 1 is a high-school level course that introduces students to common vocabulary, sound system, phrases and concepts necessary for daily interpersonal interaction. It is designed to establish a strong foundation and promote future success in Spanish learning years of studies to come.

Students will focus on acquisition of the four skills in learning foreign language:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Emphasis will also be placed on the appreciation of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries through the study of literature, poetry, art, song sequencing, short films, projects, and games.

All activities, including projects, are intended to allow students to demonstrate their mastery of the Spanish language concepts taught in this course. This is a very dynamic and engaging course. We will not stick to the textbook as our sole resource for learning. True learning goes beyond a textbook. It happens when you engage the student and understand their likes and needs.

This course includes additional learning time outside of the regular scheduled class on Mondays. Also, to assist with the formation of having conversations in Spanish and engaging with Spanish speakers. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Spanish club and with students from Colombia via Zoom and letters.

Course Objectives:

The primary objective of my class is for the student to not only learn Spanish well enough to be successful in the next level; but also to love the language and the culture that surrounds the Spanish language. Learning Spanish isn’t just mastering a set of skills. It goes beyond that. It’s having a growth in the complexity of messages, where the student can feel comfortable to engage in his own learning and feel secure that they can use what they have learned inside of the classroom, in the “real world”.

The High School Spanish I course helps students:

  • Engage in language learning
  • Comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns and vocabulary terms and phrases that will establish the foundation for future levels
  • Generate language incorporating basic and some specialized vocabulary and a range of grammar patterns
  • Read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in Spanish
  • Obtain awareness of cultural practices, products, and perspectives of various Spanish-speaking countries as well as Hispanics and Spaniards that have made an impact in their respective countries, around the world, and within the United States
  • Regularly assess progress in proficiency through projects, assessments, and speaking/writing submissions
  • Practice skills learned in the classroom via Zoom with a group of students from Colombia (most of them home-schooled as well)
