“…the field of my labors is my own self. I have become a problem to myself…I am investigating myself, my memory, my mind. There is nothing strange in the fact that whatever is not myself is far from me. But what could be nearer to me than myself?” Augustine of Hippo, ~400 AD

Man’s desire to understand the inner-workings of his own mind is not a modern invention, nor is it merely a preoccupation of the overly-scientific or self-absorbed. As Augustine discovered for himself more than 1,600 years ago, our desire to know God inevitably takes us on a journey to know ourselves. It is with this truth in view that we approach the field of psychology.

In AP Psychology, students will be introduced to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings. We will consider the history of the field as well as psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Throughout the course, students will employ psychological research methods, including ethical considerations, as they use the scientific method, evaluate claims and evidence, and effectively communicate ideas. Throughout our study, we will seek to understand how the field of psychology interacts and integrates with the fact that we are made – mind, body, and spirit – in the image of God.

AP Psychology is equivalent to an introductory college survey course. Students will have the option of taking the National AP Exam in May in order to earn college credit for the class. Students are expected to keep up with the reading in the course textbook. Classes will consist of discussion and activities that reinforce the concepts in the textbook. Tests, quizzes and projects will be done at home. The class will meet once a week for 1 ½ hours.
