Spanish 3/4 (W9:00)

Date/Time: Wednesday - 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Recommended Grades: 10th, 11th, 12th
Department: Foreign Languages
Grade Level: High School (9th-12th)

In Spanish III/IV we will compose longer papers, communicate more abstract thoughts, and exercise and refine our listening and speaking skills. In addition to activities from previous courses, (reading, online work, games, songs, skits, and storytelling), we will interact with native Spanish speakers. In the study of culture, we will examine historical and contemporary events and figures and read books for youth by Spanish authors. Outside of class, students are required to fulfill one of the following three cultural studies options per semester:

  1. attendance at a minimum of two Spanish club meetings at the teacher’s house or at other locations around Atlanta, such as the High Museum of Art or a Mexican restaurant.
  2. attendance at one meeting, plus writing in response to questions about a second cultural topic (3.) writing in response to questions about each of two cultural topics

Spanish club meetings are held one Saturday per month.

This course is designed to be completed over five days each week: one day of class attendance and participation and four separate days of homework. Homework will require at least 45 minutes per day, four days per week. Assignments include watching and practicing with several online resources, writing original compositions, reading, completing worksheets, and producing projects implementing art materials and technology.

Those who complete three semesters of Spanish with an A average and demonstrate appreciation for Spanish language and culture by fulfilling tasks set forth in the course syllabus are invited to join the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the national honor society of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Summer preparation for Spanish III consists of viewing entertaining Spanish videos and keeping a log of time spent in viewing. Those who register later in the summer may turn in their log later in the semester.

Books: Two or three Spanish novellas for learners of Spanish will be read. Titles will be determined according to students’ interests, progress, and current events related to themes of the novellas. This course does not use a textbook, but instruction includes grammar and vocabulary.

Reliable Internet and email are essential for Spanish homework.
