Recommended Grades: 6th, 7th
Departments: Math, Sixth Grade Core Classes
Grade Level: Middle School (6th-8th)

The middle school math course is intended for the middle school student who needs one more year of math before delving into the more formal study of algebra that is typically provided in pre-algebra. Both 6th and 7th grade students are great candidates for this course. Each week the instructor will spend time pre-teaching material for the week, reviewing homework assignments, and troubleshooting areas of difficulty. Mathematical literacy and application of word problems will also be emphasized. Because middle school is the prime stage of development in which students move from concrete thought to more abstract thought, hands-on labs will be done frequently in class to facilitate this process. Students will be assigned homework, classwork, and tests, and they will be given grades for these assignments. This course is intended to offload teaching responsibilities from the parent at home.

Texts: Teaching Textbooks: Math 7 will be used for this course. The instructor will give weekly assignments to be done at home. Computer lessons provide plenty of support for the students. Teaching Textbooks offers two purchasing options: a 10-month subscription which includes access to an e-textbook and delivers all assignments through an online account (Edition 3.0); or a spiral bound textbook with accompanying CDs to deliver all assignments in a computerized format (Edition 2.0). Visit www.teachingtextbooks.com for more information on the curriculum. To find a placement test, click here (recommended to ensure that the student is enrolled in the appropriate class).

Technology Requirements: Students will need access to a computer with internet access and a printer at home.

Cost: $20 one-time supply fee due in September (covers copy costs, lab supplies, and Engrade cost); $65 per month for 9 months; textbook and technology costs as listed above. (8 student minimum)
