This introductory course will provide students with the technical and creative skills they need to feel comfortable photographing any subject. Students will learn how to produce a well-exposed image by balancing the three elements of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO). They will learn how to make both creative, and technically informed, focus and depth of field choices. They will learn how to use natural light to illuminate images, and will learn how and where to use the light, based on variations in the time of day and weather. They will learn how to produce their desired color temperature by setting Kelvin manually in-camera. They will learn how to introduce artificial light to produce desired lighting effects. They will learn how to frame subjects and scenes, and how to make all elements work together to produce strong composition for maximum impact on the viewer. They will learn basic image processing and workflow. They will study historical examples of technique, form, composition and storytelling. But most importantly, they will learn by doing; they will get hands-on experience employing the concepts outlined in each class. By the end of this class, students will have a strong grasp of the basic technical and creative tools of photography, and will have started developing their own point of view and photographic style.
